Pharmaceutical mixer - Impact Centrifugal milling machines

Pharmaceutical milling equipment mainly used to reduce the particle size of solids and this operation has various terms such as disintegration, dispersion, pulverization and grinding. Milling operation allows more uniformity of the ingredients, increases surface area to improve dissolution rate and bioavailability and increases the speed of substance and diffusion processes.

Pharmaceutical applications which need milling process in preparation are such as Griseofulvin, Penicillin G, Aspirin suppository, Calomel ointment and Aerosols and Suspension.

Pharmaceutical mill consists of three main parts: feed chute, grinding mechanism and discharge chute. To specify the particle size reduction degree you should know the degree of comminution “i” which is the ratio between the diameter of pieces of material before milling “D” to the particles diameter after milling operation “d” (i = D / d). So the times of reduction produce the final particle size as follows: Great (large) – in 2-6 times; Medium - up 6-10  times; Fine - at 10-50 times; Micro fine - in 50-100 times; and Super fine - thin (colloidal) – in 100-10000 times.

Milling equipment can be classified by the way of milling: Impact - Centrifugal machine, Impact machine, Cutting machine, Attrition machine and Compression machine.

Impact - Centrifugal milling machines

Comitrol® Processor Model 1700 – Micrcut head operation. (1) Blades, (2) Product, (3) Impeller
This type of machine consists of high speed rotor (impeller) and stator (cutting blades) with adjustable clearance range. So the product is guided to the rotor (impeller) which is rotating in high speed then the product strikes the cutting edges of the microcut blades to start the particle size reduction then particles are discharged through the spaces between the cutting blades.
